British actor Alan Rickman has lost his secret battle with cancer. He passed away on Jan. 14 2016 at the age of 69.
His family said in a statement today: 'The actor and director Alan Rickman has died from cancer at the age of 69. He was surrounded by family and friends.'
He was most well known among the younger generation for his role as Professor Severus Snape in the wildly successful Harry Potter movie series.
His portrayal of the long-suffering lovelorn anti-hero in the series had earned him many fans and he was constantly featured as an Internet meme.
Perhaps his most famous line in the series was this when asked about his feelings for Harry Potter's mother, his childhood love:
He first gained mainstream notice when he portrayed one of the greatest movie villains of all-time, Hans Gruber, in the first Die Hard movie in 1988.

Another notable villain role he took up was the Sheriff of Notingham in 1991's Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. He won a Bafta Award for playing the role.

He also had roles in Love Actually, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Sweeney Todd, and Sense and Sensibility aside from his success in the Harry Potter Franchise.
