5 annoying sandwich/salad bar customers you don't want to be

aka: Confessions of a rookie salad server.

During the December holidays, I had a nice time working at a food outlet where I didn’t just earn a salary, I also gained a lot of experience working with the people around me.

Of course, I had many interactions with different types of customers, some who were very respectful and nice, and some... who were just customers you would not want to be.

1. The one who is as fussy as a five-year-old

Most commonly heard saying: “I want sauce... but not too much... wait that’s too much... could you scrape some of it off?”

It may be our job to meet your demands but there has to be a limit, especially when there are many customers queuing behind you in the middle of “rush hour”.

We’re not perfect, how could we know exactly how much you wanted? Cut us some slack, will you?

2. The one who is too 随便 (suí biàn, meaning bochup/too laid-back)

Most commonly heard saying: “Uhhh… give me everything! Oh cannot have more than three ah, then just anyhow pick a few for me!”

As much as I appreciate the fact that you’re so relaxed with your order, it’s difficult for us to serve you when you have no preferences at all. This is especially inconvenient during lunch hour, when we simply don't have the capacity to do the thinking for you — unless, of course, you're fine with lettuce, lettuce and lettuce with your bread.

3. The one who is never contented

Most commonly heard saying: “Can you give me more vegetables? More lettuce... more onions... more (x3)”

With one customer hogging the line with his/her constant requests, we are unable to serve food efficiently and also attended to the people waiting behind him/her. Aside from that, we also have our own food serving guidelines to follow, especially with regard to the amount of ingredients we can give to each customer.

It not only hinders our work when a customer behaves this way; it also gets us in trouble with our supervisors if they happen to catch us. Stop making our lives so difficult, please.

4. The one whose time is too precious

"I need my two Caesar salad wraps and my heated-up special order coffee and muffin 10 minutes ago, even though I just ordered it." Most commonly heard saying: "Where's my order???"

Customer: (2 minutes after ordering) “Sorry, is this my order?”

Server: “Your order is being prepared now.”

Customer: “Please hurry up, why is it taking so long? I need to get to work.”

We try to be fast, we really do. After all, if we get an order ready faster, we get to finish our work more quickly also. You hurrying us isn’t going to make us work more efficiently, you're likely just going to end up stressing and upsetting us.

5. The one who is too indecisive

(Photo: Thinkstock) "Ummm... actually, I don't want that sandwich you're making anymore. Can I have just a pie and a coffee to go?" (Photo: Thinkstock)

Most commonly heard saying: "Eh sorry, can I have _____ instead, please? Oh wait, no, can I have _____?"

“Give me a ham sandwich please.”

/the order is prepared/

“Oh, could I have extra cheese?”

/the order is toasted for the second time/

/the vegetables are added and the sandwich is completed/

“Oh help me add a scoop of avocado!”

/the sandwich is unwrapped and re-opened/

Nuff said, I think. Just think carefully about your order before making it and stop wasting our time, thank you very much.
