Valencia FC executive president Chan Lay Hoon from S'pore mispronounces 'Gary Neville' twice in official presentation

But it's nice to hear a Singaporean accent in an European football press conference.

In a press conference unveiling new Valencia Football Club head coach Gary Neville yesterday (Dec. 3), the club's executive president Chan Lay Hoon mispronounced his surname twice in five minutes (including time for translation).

Despite the translator saying the correct pronunciation, Chan – also the club's chairperson – pronounced Neville as Nervelle, giving the former Manchester United defender's name a touch of Singaporean class because she can.

Well, we guess it's because, you know, Singaporeans like names such as Rochelle, Chezelle or Kerchelle.

Nervelle Neville. was announced as the new head coach on Dec. 2. Check out 1:14 and 4:44.

With over 80 journalists from all over the world in attendance, Chan naturally had only good things to say about Nervelle Neville.

"In my press conference on Monday I said that we were looking for a new coach that would be able to provide strong leadership for our team, give a fresh approach understand to our sporting plan and –most importantly- understand and value the engagement with our fans. Gary is an excellent coach who has exactly the qualities that VCF need at the moment. He is a leader, a great motivator and is hugely respected in football for his understanding of the game. His personal experience of success at the highest level will help inspire our players. Peter and I have known Gary for many years in both a personal and professional capacity, and we see something very special in him. This appointment is not about his nationality, it is not about his friendship with Peter. It is about Gary’s qualities that make him our choice to lead Valencia at this critical time. I believe he will gain the loyalty and respect of our players, and coach the potential from them. I trust he is totally committed to Valencia at all levels.”

Chan, who is also chairperson of Thomson Medical Centre – also owned by "Remisier King" Peter Lim, was brought along by Lim when he acquired the club last October.

The Singaporean tycoon paid S$605 million to acquire the La Liga side and since his takeover we've seen a spike in the number of Singapore-related stuff happening in Valencia like the appearance of a SG50 logo in the Mestalla, home ground of Valencia FC, and hordes of Spaniards giving a Singaporean the rock star treatment.

Now, we can add the Singaporean accent into the mix.
