Translation gaffe on Mediacorp's notice banner

MediaCorp is hiring: A Tamil translator for its notices.

A few months ago, opposition party Singaporeans First (SingFirst) Party apologised for its Tamil slogan gaffe. SingFirst secretary-general Tan Jee Say told the media that the gibberish for "Restore our Nation" was due to an error by the printer.

Mediacorp, Singapore's largest media broadcaster, must have used the same printer for its banner.

A netizen pointed out that the Tamil translation for Mediacorp's Notice of Filming is gibberish.

Let's take a moment to ponder about this incident.

Our national broadcaster and the owner of MediaCorp Vasantham has just provided a wrong Tamil translation and Mediacorp staff are none the wiser about the error.

What could have caused the error?

One possible reason is the challenge of printing four languages on one copy of banner. Any amendment (in terms of spacing for example) in the three languages above would have caused the Tamil font to jumble up.

But all MediaCorp needs is to do is to assign at least one Tamil literate staff to double check the draft before the text goes for print.

Anyway, this is a translation of "Please be advised that this area is being used for filming and photography. If you do not wish to be filmed or photographed, please avoid this area. Thank you for your cooperation" by a Tamil literate friend of Mothership.sg:

"இந்த பகுதியில் படப்பிடிப்பு மற்றும் புகைப்படம் எடுக்கப்படும் என்பதை தெரிவித்துக்கொள்கிறொம். நீங்கள் படப்பிடிப்பில் அல்லது புகைப்படத்தில் இடம்பெற வேண்டாம் எனில் , தயவுசெய்து இந்த பகுதியை தவிர்க்கவும். உங்கள் ஒத்துழைப்புக்கு நன்றி".

You are welcome, Mediacorp.
