5 things even non-fanatics of toys, games & comics will enjoy at Singapore's own Comic-Con

For those who get dragged to go by their significant others.

The annual Singapore Toys, Games & Comic Convention (STGCC) has returned to its usual haunt at Marina Bay Sands (MBS) from Sep 12-13, much to the excitement of otakus all around.

If you don't care for Stars Wars, collectible toys, table-top RPG games and/or cosplaying, you're probably not an otaku. But fret not!

Mothership.sg has prepared a quick guide for you newbies who may have been dragged to the convention by your geeky significant other. Here are the list of things you'd probably be surprised to see:

1. Cosplayers Everywhere

One of the C's in STGCC does not stand for Cosplay.

However since the convention is an all-around geek convention, cosplayers will be out in full force. The funny thing is that most cosplayers don't actually go into the convention centre. Most really just hang around outside the doors and will hog the bathrooms for mirrors.

Don't worry if you can't identify which anime they're from, because eventually you'll see stuff from American comics that will pique your interest.

2. Shopping Bags Of Toys!

Many bags, there are.

Believe it or not, people spend their hard-earned money on toys.

And not the Toys-R-Us kind. Some toys are somewhat affordable, costing within the $70 to $150 range, whereas you can expect some of them going up into the thousands.

3. Being Talent-Spotted by Big names

Big names like Marvel & Magic The Gathering, actually come down to Singapore to check out local talent.

Marvel holds a portfolio check for aspiring comic artists to prove that they have the chops to be a Marvel artist. Magic The Gathering has an entire section dedicated to letting people sit and play cards. If you've proven to be an unstoppable opponent, you could be very well be offered to compete professionally.

Card-playing is serious business.

4. Being wowed by the local talents on display

Every year an entire section of STGCC called Artist's Alley, is set aside for independent artists or small-time creative businesses.  You can check out the largely home-grown talent and find some interesting and more affordable buys.

5. No, it's not a military convention.

Expect large sickles, fantasy axes, light sabers, and the obvious stormtrooper.

Security is high at STGCC.

Expect big ... weaponry.
