5 observations at Kong Hwa School, the Nomination centre for Marine Parade, MacPherson, and Potong Pasir

An initial sense of what we will expect for the battle at Marine Parade, MacPherson and Potong Pasir.

Editor’s note: Mothership.sg called for young Singaporeans to step up and provide their voice in written form for GE2015. The aim of such an endeavour is to provide our readers a means to view GE2015 through the lens of young Singaporeans, warts, sparkles and all.

The overwhelmingly hot sun at Kong Hwa School’s parade square was filled with boos and cheers as tireless activists filled the nomination center for what turned out to be a historic Nomination Day yesterday (Sep 1).

Kong Hwa School is the nomination centre for MacPherson, Mountbatten and Potong Pasir SMCs, and Marine Parade GRC.

Here are 5 observations of what happened at Kong Hwa School:

1. The National Solidarity Party (NSP) team for MacPherson was way under-prepared

The NSP's decision to take on both the Workers’ Party (WP) and the People’s Action Party (PAP) at MacPherson was made quite some time before the general election (GE) - but the candidate who will contest there has been a mystery since Steve Chia dropped out of the race.

Cheo’s arrival at Kong Hwa thus drew a lot of attention - the NSP-WP-PAP three-corner fight at MacPherson had been the centre of controversy in the lead up to the GE, with the WP not even showing up at the second round of the opposition party talks.

Cheo, who was accompanied by NSP Central Executive Committee member Yap Yew Weng, eventually managed to hand in his nomination papers. When asked about his supporters, he said in Mandarin that the nomination was at his top priority. “Supporters - if they want to come here and support they will come here to support,” he added.

But when the former one-term Nee Soon Central MP made his speech at Kong Hwa at 1230pm, there were no visible party cadres or supporters on the ground. WP supporters were - unsurprisingly - quiet, and so were the PAP supporters.

Cheo spoke about his plans for MacPherson should he be elected, but he didn’t give a summary that was brief enough for the time limit given to election officials. And as he got cut off mid-sentence, there were no jeers nor chants or cheers - nor did Cheo carry on.

Compare that to Singapore People's Party (SPP)'s Lina Chiam’s performance when she got cut off:

Loke Hoe Yeong

The person standing beside Chiam is Chiam See Tong's biographer Loke Hoe Yeong, who recently wrote a best-selling book on Chiam ("Let The People Have Him").

Besides saving Chiam's speech from disappearing with the wind, the SPP Assistant Sec-Gen appears to be reciting Chiam's speech together with her. If that's really the case, it is a shame that "Chiam's brains" is not running in this GE.

2. Tin Pei Ling continues her comeback

Marine Parade GRC MP and MacPherson SMC candidate Tin Pei Ling - who started out with a very negative public image in the last GE - has gone on to show that she is able to stand on her own, without coattails to ride.

Tin, whose team have “won over many hearts and minds” according to PM Lee, had the honour of making a speech at her party’s manifesto unveiling.

You could say that she is on a roll - she rallied her supporters with gusto at the Nomination centre, despite jeers from the opposition.

Tin had also been first at Kong Hwa, arriving through the school’s main gates at around 10:36am, around the same time as SPP's Chiam. No party elders, no senior MPs are required to accompany the Parliament's youngest MP.

3. Seah Kian Peng almost couldn’t finish his Tamil speech

The PAP’s Seah Kian Peng - who is running in Marine Parade GRC - came off to a rocky start after Emeritus Senior Minister (ESM)Goh Chok Tong spoke on how he had served voters with "sincerity, humility and integrity”.

Seah came off to a shaky start, and was booed after he paused awkwardly while saying the party’s manifesto slogan in Tamil.

4. The Chiams make an appearance - with everyone going quiet as Chiam See Tong stood for a good ten minutes

Veteran opposition MP Chiam See Tong - along with SPP’s Lina Chiam and their daughter Camilla Chiam - came to Kong Hwa in support of Lina Chiam’s candidacy for Potong Pasir.

The elder Chiam - who was wheelchair-bound due to a stroke - received a rousing welcome when he arrived, with PAP activists even hastily crossing the political lines to offer Chiam some shade.

Camilla Chiam told Yahoo! Singapore that it was obvious that her parents had "earned the respect of Singaporeans". “My parents have never shirked their responsibilities; they’ve been doing this since they were six months old", she added.

5. WP candidates headed in quickly - and left pretty quickly too.

The six candidates running for MacPherson SMC and Marine Parade GRC headed into Kong Hwa at 10:15am - and left as soon as the speeches ended at around 1pm.

They, however, gave a pretty rousing speech - aided by the enthusiasm of WP fans:

With star candidates like NUS professor Daniel Goh and government scholar Leon Perera on the East Coast GRC team, you can sense that "All eyes are on East Coast" (a play on Low's GE 2011 quote) instead of Marine Parade.
