5 handy tips to surviving a lunchtime rally

Maximise your daytime rally experience with this nifty guide.

Ever since 2011, the lunchtime rally has held a special significance for Singapore.

It was at this very same venue where PM Lee Hsien Loong apologised to Singaporeans for his government’s policies and possibly scored precious votes back into his favour — naturally, therefore, we're all waiting to hear what he will say today, and what the party holding Wednesday's lunchtime rally will be saying tomorrow.

So if you’re around the area and are thinking of spending some time attending the rally before going off nearby to buy some mooncakes, this guide is for you:

1. Go early (like really early)

Unlike evening rallies, this is the one rally that you will want to come and park yourself right in front for. This venue does not possess the luxury of space. If you’re not one of a few hundred early birds, this will be your view:

Perhaps it was an SDP organiser’s miscalculation but the stage was way too low for anyone to have a glimpse of the speakers. So, go early, else you’ll be better off live streaming the rally from the comfort of your office chair.

Or do you want to be a sadface like this lady :(

2. Bring an umbrella

If you are unable to slip out of the office early enough, bring an umbrella and stand by the side and catch the speakers. This is by far the best spot but it comes with a huge downside.

Great view, but you will be at the mercy of the mid-day sun.

While it might look shady, the trees provide insignificant cover from the blazing heat.

Alternatively, you can buy an umbrella of your favourite political party on site and share it with a newfound rally kaki.

3. Eat your lunch while attending the rally

With so many great makan places around this rally area, you'll be spoilt for choice, but the best picks for the lunchtime rally seem to be a salad bowl or McDs:

This type of entertainment comes only once every 4 years so make that lunch hour count — multitask.

4. Make friends with UOB folks

The best spot to enjoy the rally, in actuality, is from the offices of UOB.

These windows overlook the entire rally and faces directly the stage as well. We’re not quite certain how good the audio might be but, that issue can be easily remedied by live streaming.

5. Bring a personal fan

With so many bodies in the way and surrounded by concrete walls it’s going to get stuffy and hot.

The occasional breeze that goes through UOB plaza is a godsend to the audience braving the Singapore mid-day sun.

And because we're so nice, here's a

Bonus tip: Check out the fringe entertainment

Raffles Place is possibly one of the areas in Singapore with the highest volume of human traffic during weekdays — what better opportunity is there to get a message out to a (pretty much) captive audience?

Nope, he’s not a busker but he did a great job as a human statue.

Best political jokes ever? Might be even better than the politicians on stage. Your mileage may vary.

Why didn't the police catch them, you might wonder? Should they? We won't know, since from our experience on Monday they were too busy marshalling the crowds in the area — spot these folks while you still can! You could even hold secret drinking games with your friends.

Now, friends, go forth equipped and empowered to be the most badass rally attendee. You can do it!
