Finally, we know when the General Election (GE) will be held.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong wrote on his Facebook that he advised President Tony Tan to dissolve Parliament and issue the Writ of Election.

The Nomination Day will be Tuesday, September 1, and Singaporeans will go to the polls on Friday, 11 September, 11.

PM Lee said that he called this GE "to seek your mandate to take Singapore beyond SG50, into its next half century".

He also emphasized that "more than that, you will be choosing the team to work with you for the next 15-20 years, and setting the direction for Singapore for the next 50 years".

PM Lee concluded by saying that together his team and Singaporeans "can keep Singapore special for many years to come".

What is different about this GE?

1. Polling day falls on a Friday, unlike GE 2006 and 2011, which was held on a Saturday.

2. Campaigning period (9 days) is shorter, compared to GE 2006 and 2011 (10 days of campaigning).

3. To account for inflation, the maximum spending limit will be raised from S$3.50 to S$4.00 for every voter on the register of electors for the electoral division in which a candidate is seeking election to be a Member of Parliament.

4. Ballot Paper to include the candidates’ photos. The new ballot papers will be larger to accommodate the photos.
