A year of free mobile data.

That is Singaporean Internet service provider MyRepublic’s promise if it successfully wins the bid to become Singapore’s fourth Telco, breaking the decade long dominance of Starhub, M1 and Singtel.

“The freedom of unlimited data has been a cornerstone of our 4th telco campaign and this is a chance to give people a small taste of what that reality can be like,” says MyRepublic CEO Malcolm Rodrigues, “We really want people to put our network to the test. Go nuts! Watch all the videos you want! Everything we learn here will better prepare us for a real rollout.”

All MyRepublic customers who have signed up before 30 September 2015 and remain a customer until the launch date of MyRepublic’s mobile services will qualify for the 12 months free unlimited data.

A MyRepublic spokesman said: “Since MyRepublic officially announced its telco ambitions in April, more than 14,000 individuals have indicated their support for MyRepublic becoming Singapore’s 4th telco, with over 13,000 indicating their interest in the mobility trial.”

This trial will take place in the Jurong Lake District with the area around Jurong East Bus Interchange and Jurong East MRT station scheduled to be added by November 2015.

Free data for 12 months? Zhun bo?

The logic here seems simple: take a populace that has had to deal with rising plan prices, slashed data caps and a lack of innovation from the incumbents and offer them a different and potentially cheaper alternative and you have all the ingredients you need to create a rabid fan base.

Regardless of the outcome however, this is good news for consumers like you and me because the increased competition will force the current players to innovate or be disrupted meaning better customer relations, more competitive prices and a greater degree of product innovation.
