Reform Party (RP) secretary-general Kenneth Jeyaretnam said on Wednesday that blogger Roy Ngerng has applied to join his party.

Should Ngerng's application be confirmed by RP's central executive committee, Jeyaretnam said he could be fielded as part of the RP's team to contest against Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's six-person PAP team in Ang Mo Kio group representation constituency (GRC).

Ngerng wore the RP's yellow polo t-shirt and joined the walkabout at Telok Blangah Drive on Wednesday night, an area which falls within the boundaries of the four-member West Coast GRC.

Ngerng who spoke to reporters before the walkabout, said he chose to join RP because the party's manifesto is in line with what he has been advocating for in the past two years, such as an increased expenditure for education and the provision of universal healthcare for Singaporeans.

Even though speculation is rife that Ngerng chose to join RP as it looks likely to be the only party to go head-on against PM Lee's team again -- having contested there in GE2011 -- the 34-year-old blogger said his interest in joining RP was expressed to Jeyaretnam sometime in the middle of this year.

Ngerng had previously volunteered with Singapore People's Party and attended events by Singapore Democratic Party.

He was charged with making a public nuisance at a YMCA event in 2014 and is currently embroiled in a defamation case brought against him by PM Lee.

Ngerng and PM Lee formally crossed paths in court this year, where the blogger subjected the prime minister of Singapore to seven hours of continuous questioning on the stand during a High Court hearing on July 1, 2015.

The hearing was to assess the amount of damages Ngerng has to pay PM Lee, which could be in excess of S$250,000.

Jeyaretnam said he does not see the court cases to be an obstacle to Ngerng standing for elections.
