It is more or less confirmed.

Veteran MP Yeo Guat Kwang, 54, is likely to lead the PAP's suicide squad in Aljunied GRC.

In his unveiling of the PAP candidates at Ang Mo Kio GRC on Aug 15, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced that Yeo would not be retiring yet.

Yeo told the media back then that he did not know where he will be fielded, but added that he will “serve with a sincere heart” wherever he goes.

Earlier, there was talk that Yeo might be fielded in Fengshan SMC but the announcement of Cheryl Chan as the new Fengshan SMC candidate has put that rumour to rest.

Only Aljunied is left unnanounced

Only one PAP has not yet been revealed — Aljunied GRC.

Veteran MP Charles Chong (from Joo Chiat) was just on Thursday morning confirmed in a press release to be challenging the incumbent Workers' Party's Lee Li Lian.

We reckoned this would be the case beforehand especially since Chong has been holding Meet-the-People Sessions at Punggol East. Moreover, Chong was an MP in Pasir Ris Punggol for two terms  (2001, 2006).

So, who will Yeo replace in the PAP's Aljunied suicide squad?

In an interview with Lianhe Wanbao on Saturday (Aug 22), former Cabinet Minister Lim Boon Heng, 67, said that two Aljunied candidates — Victor Lye in Bedok Reservoir-Punggol and K. Muralidharan Pillai in Paya Lebar — have "political office-holder potential".

This means that Yeo is unlikely to replace them.

Yeo is also unlikely to replace Shamsul Kamar, who just became a candidate this month (Aug 1). Shamsul replaced potential PAP Aljunied GRC candidate Kahar Hassan who had been working hard on the ground for 16 months. The reason for this, by the way, remains suspiciously unknown.

Lim, who plays the role of a mentor for the Aljunied "suicide squad" team, also threw another spanner in the Wanbao interview by using Jurong GRC in GE2001 as an example.

In the example, Lim said that they replaced two candidates on Nomination Day.

Turning to this team, Yeo (and another candidate) could very well replace Chan Hui Yuh in Serangoon and Chua Eng Leong in Eunos.

Anyway, we shall bite the bullet and predict that Yeo will replace Chan in Serangoon.
