According to this unverified Facebook post, Coney Island, alternatively known as Pulau Serangoon, is rumoured to be opening to the public by July 2015.
Located merely 100 metres away from the north-eastern coast of mainland Singapore, the island which is part of Punggol New Town -- otherwise known as "Waterfront Town" -- can be accessed by foot via link bridges from either Punggol or Pasir Ris Coast Industrial Park.
The 45ha island is roughly the size of 50 football fields.
In a news report in 2014, the Urban Redevelopment Authority said that under the Master Plan, a part of Coney Island is zoned for residential, sport and recreational use.
However, parts of the island has been zoned for interim park use as the land is not immediately required for development.
Tender documents stated that Coney Island will have infrastructure such as a bird watching station, walkways and solar street lights.
The public can possibly look forward to cycling and boating activities.
Coney Island was previously owned by the Aw brothers of Haw Par Villa fame.
Various entrepreneurs bought and sold the island in the 1950s as they wanted to develop it into Singapore's version of Coney Island.
Apparently, nothing materialised and only the name stuck.
