Major Lee Mei Yi will be the first female fighter pilot flying at the National Day Parade

This 50th National Day Parade (NDP) will see the first woman fighter pilot fly the F-16 Fighting Falcon as part of Singapore's Golden Jubilee celebrations.

Pilot Major Lee Mei Yi will be part of the "50" formation flypast, which is a part of the largest and most extensive air segment in the parade's history, where 50 aircraft of various types will be taking part.

The NDP will showcase the traditional State Flag flypast, the "Five Stars" Tribute flypast and a four-minute aerial flypast segment comprising various aircraft.

The "Five Stars" Tribute aerial flypast will be executed by the RSAF Black Knights to remember the late Lee Kuan Yew.

The 30-year-old's participation in the parade this year is the culmination of her career after going on stints to Australia and India, having joined the Republic of Singapore Air Force 11 years ago.

The challenge of flying in formation comes from the close proximity of the aircraft to one another, she said.
