[UPDATED on Monday, 22 June at 4:30pm: Adding details of suspect being charged]

The young man involved in Saturday's shooting incident at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital that injured a police officer was on Monday charged in court.

Muhammad Iskandar Sa'at, 23, now faces a holding charge of illegally discharging a firearm under Singapore's Arms Offences Act after he allegedly fired three shots at the 31-year-old police officer, hitting the officer's left thumb and right foot. The officer was over the weekend warded in stable condition at Tan Tock Seng Hospital after undergoing surgery.

If found guilty, Muhammad Iskandar will be sentenced to death, but state prosecutors may modify the charge he faces later on, after further police investigation, Mothership.sg understands.

Muhammad Iskandar was on Friday, 19 June arrested for an unrelated motor vehicle theft, and was brought to the hospital in Yishun for medical attention after he complained of chest pains, according to local media reports.

While in an examination room with one of the two officers, after the other had stepped out momentarily, the 23-year-old made an escape attempt, grabbing the officer's .38 calibre Taurus revolver and firing three shots.

According to The Straits Times, the suspect was subsequently brought under control by two paramedics who quickly entered to intervene.
