Well, now you know. Vaguely. Kind of.

The FIFA Women's World Cup 2015 commenced on June 6, 2015, and you've probably not heard of it because all you heard about was Sepp Blatter this, Sepp Blatter that and Sepp Blatter this again.

Here are 6 quick facts, or semblances of facts, about the tournament to cue you in.

#1 It is hosted in Canada because...

No other country wanted to host the event, according to Canada Soccer president Victor Montagliani.

#2 There will be 24 teams, up from 16 in previous editions

The teams featured are as follows:

#3 There will be spectacular goals

From sumptuous volleys, outrageous screamers to spectacular displays of finesse that even Ronaldinho will be proud of.

Before becoming a naysayer who probably hasn’t watched a single game of professional women’s football and dismissing it, I mean, check this out:

amazing goal 1 (2) Heather O'Reilly from USWMT with an unstoppable shot

Or this:

#4 There will be drama

Be it stoppage time winners...

Or bloodcurdling tackles that midfield marauders like Roy Keane and Joey Barton will certainly approve.

Oh, the push CAN come to shove. It has happened at women’s games all over, just not the Women’s World Cup yet.

push shove

Still, don’t bet against it.

#5 The games will be played on synthetic pitches.

The 2015 Women’s World Cup will be the first World Cup played on artificial turf. Artificial turfs are purportedly cheaper, longer-lasting and climate-resistant.

However, overheating issues are a cause for concern. In fact, the temperature of the pitch was measured to be at 49 degree Celsius prior to the Canada-China match kick-off. That’s when the air temperature was only at 23 degree Celsius!

#6 Imagine Dragons supposedly penned the official song for the tournament

Warriors, a single released by American rock band Imagine Dragons, is reportedly the official song for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup. This piece of information may not be verified from official sources.

#7 No one really cares about it.

That too is an unfortunate fact plaguing most women’s edition of sports that are historically or ostensibly masculine. If a “sufficient” number of consumers people had cared about the event, it is likely that more than one country would have launched their bids to host the tournament.

Perhaps the greatest insult to the tournament would be that nobody cared enough to suggest boycotting it in light of the FIFA corruption scandal.

On the other hand, I can almost imagine conspiracy theorists proposing that such "indifference" has got to do with tournament being held in North America rather than Russia or the Middle East.

We shall never know the official reasons as to why nobody suggested boycotting the tournament.

Not that I wish for participating countries to withdraw from the tournament. Rather, “not knowing” makes it difficult to foresee what’s in store for the 2018 men’s World Cup, a tournament that more people, at least in this part of the world, care about.
