Singapore is known to many as a food paradise.
And the lawyers at the Amos Yee's challenge for bail conditions decided to take it up one notch with their epic food analogies yesterday.
Yee, who is accused of attacking Christianity and transmitting an obscene image, had filed a motion to the High Court for his bail to be lowered from $30,000 to $20,000 and to be allowed to post online.
The High Court refused to vary the bail conditions after the 16-year old teenager said no to psychiatric counselling.
Hence, Yee remains in remand pending his trial which has begun today.
Below are excerpts from the exchanges between Yee's lawyer, the Deputy Public Prosecutor and the Judge.
1. Social media is “equivalent to drinking water”
Yee's lawyer Alfred Dodwell said that Yee has been on social media since the age of 8 and engaging online is “equivalent to drinking water” for the blogger, who has decided to stop schooling despite good results in the O Levels.
2. Diet - "Learn to curb themselves"
The argument did not impress presiding Judge Tay Yong Kwang who used a diet analogy.
Justice Tay asked the defense counsel what the difficulty was in complying with such conditions.
“They just have to learn to curb themselves,” Justice Tay remarked.
3. “He wants to drink Coke".
Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Hay Hung Chun retorted that the conditions were “not about drinking water”, as Amos would still be able to communicate privately with others and even shop online.
“He wants to drink Coke,” Hay said.
4. "The law is not a buffet"
Hay also argued that "the law is not a buffet for him (Yee) to pick and choose what he wants and chuck away what he doesn't like".
