AIA Singapore tried asking photographer for free content, told to get lost

Should content producers reciprocate in such instances?

AIA Singapore approached a local photographer Tan Zexun via Instagram messaging asking if they could use his images as part of their campaign.

AIA was promptly told to get lost.

Tan's friend subsequently said "Send this to some of the viral sites."

A quick study of Instagram’s Terms of Use reveal that users of Instagram “grant to Instagram a non-exclusive, fully paid and royalty-free, transferable, sub-licensable, worldwide license” to use the photographs and other content generated on Instagram.

However, Instagram users still retain copyright to their own work. The work cannot taken by others for their own use without the copyright owner’s consent. As in this case with AIA Singapore and Tan.
