All Comics Connection shops in S'pore have closed down

Goodbye and godspeed.

Home-grown comic chain Comics Connection has closed down for good after 23 years in Singapore.

The last store was at Plaza Singapura, where its signboard was changed to another retailer Toy Or Game's (TOG's) in December 2015.

My Paper reported that the handover was completed on May 1 last year.

Used to be located at heartland malls and train stations, Comics Connection was a family-owned business started by businessman Daniel Yeo.

Its humble beginnings came at a time when the manga phenomenon was gaining steam worldwide in the 1990s.

It started out as one store called Comics Paradise in Bukit Timah Plaza in 1992, after which, it peaked in 2011 and grew to 25 outlets across Singapore.

However, the 70-year-old founder could not find a successor to take over his business and his health and age were catching up on him.

TOG has since retained 12 of Comics Connection's stores, along with 10 percent of its staff and some of its stock.

They will still sell some of Comics Connection popular staple titles, such as translated Japanese manga and Hong Kong and Taiwanese comics, but the number has been cut to justify high rentals, as they would still specialise in collectible toys and video games.

Comics Connection's impending closure was noted in early 2015 when several outlets shuttered.

There were fire sales of up to 70 percent discount as early as March last year, while some stores reduced on the number of comic book titles sold.

Yeo, who is a fan of Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball series, declined to comment on Comics Connection when approached by the media.
