This is Malaysian swimmer Yeoh Yi Lin. The 21-year-old was diagnosed with bone cancer when she was 10 and lost her left leg subsequently.
In 2006, the cancer spread to her lungs, causing her to lose a portion of her right lung.
Fast forward to the 8th ASEAN Para Games today (Dec. 5).
She competed in the Women's 400M Freestyle S9 Timed Finals in the ASEAN Para Games earlier and was among four other swimmers who have joint restrictions in one leg, double below-the-knee amputations or an amputation of one leg.
She came in last.
The thing is, she nearly didn't make it into the pool at first.
She was clearly in discomfort as the swimmers were lining up.
And while her competitors were up on the swimming block, she was struggling.
At this moment, no one was sure whether she would go ahead with the swim.
Her coach (presumably) was comforting her at first.
Then he gave the no-go to the officials.
The spectators were concerned and rightly so.
But she wasn't going to let years of blood, sweat and tears go to waste.
She took the plunge...
And conquered her pain/demons.
She had promised to do her best.
And she did. Well done, Yi Lin.
