Today's the day we are supposed to have flying cars, hoverboards, Jaws 19, and self-lacing shoes

It's Back to the Future Day, people!

If you grew up in the 80s and 90s, it is very likely you've watched the Back to the Future movie series. The trilogy was released between 1985 and 1990.

In Back to the Future 2, the film's protagonist Marty McFly travels 30 years into the future to the year 2015. The film imagined what the future was like 30 years from then.

The exact moment Marty McFly arrives in 2015 is 21 October 2015 4:29 p.m.

Perhaps the most iconic 'invention' of the future depicted in the movie was the hoverboard — a skateboard without wheels that hovered a few inches from the ground.

The flying car / time machine thingy, called the DeLorean, also captured the imagination of many.

Fittingly, 21 October 2015 has been called "Back to the Future Day". While many of the film's fans are mildly disappointed that several of the inventions dreamed up in the film did not make it to reality, they can take heart that others have.
