Workers' Party secretary-general Low Thia Khiang said on Sunday his party will contest Marine Parade GRC and MacPherson SMC because he is all about giving voters what they deserve: A chance to exercise their constitutional democratic right to vote.

Low's quote via WP's Facebook post:

"As a matter of principle, The Workers' Party will contest where we have contested before. In this case, Joo Chiat is being redrawn into Marine Parade. We don't want to disappoint voters in Joo Chiat. We want to offer them a choice again in this election."

The Electoral Boundaries Review Committee report released on Friday saw Joo Chiat SMC being absorbed into Marine Parade GRC as MacPherson SMC got carved out, a move that many have called out as an act of gerrymandering.

In the 2011 general election, PAP's Charles Chong had barely beaten WP's Yee Jenn Jong by 388 votes to win Joo Chiat SMC.

Marine Parade would most likely see a close fight if WP goes head-on with PAP since as it was the fourth worst performing constituency for the incumbent and Joo Chiat the second worst during the last election.

The contest at MacPherson SMC will also be the one to watch as PAP branch secretary Rosemary Lim told The Straits Times, the ward currently headed by Tin Pei Ling was one of Marine Parade’s better-performing wards even though Marine Parade GRC witnessed PAP’s second worst win in 2011.
