National University of Singapore’s Associate Professor Daniel Goh, who is a sociologist, a persistently political citizen and a Workers’ Party member, has come out to explain via his political leanings, how the major media outlets reported on the news of the Singapore Model Parliament.

Comparing reports from The Straits Times, Lianhe Zaobao and Channel News Asia, this is what he came up with:

how the major media outlets report the Singapore Model Parliament. Straits Times frames the story as...

To reiterate Dr Goh's points (in my own words):

1. Shouldn't the newsworthiness of a prime minister who is from a minority race be priority instead of the focus that the PM in the model parliament is a woman? And why didn't The Straits Times properly explain the contentious nature of a minority PM in Singapore?

2. Shouldn't the Singapore Model Parliament be a model for the real parliament? Must the transference of best practices be one-way?

3. There is a clear fracture between the ideals and practices in parliament -- it is good to remember that the normative goes out the window when MPs play politics.
