In case you've been living in a hole (or perhaps just returned from a very long overseas trip), the 28th SEA Games are upon us, with its opening ceremony slated to begin in a couple of hours' time.

To help get you up to speed, we bring you some very uselessful facts and figures that you can employ to impress your friends/acquaintances/colleagues/a random hot girl/guy you're trying to score:

Gracing the Games are some formidable athletes who have taken their sport to the world stage.

Here are a few to look out for:

Chanatip Sonkham, Taekwondo, Thailand

Chanatip Sonkham was a female flyweight champion at the World Taekwondo Championships in 2013; she was also a bronze medal winner in the 2012 London Olympics — where she lost by one point to Brigitte Yague of Spain.

This SEA Games will be Chanatip’s first, and you can be sure that she will be a formidable contender to the others in the arena.

Luis Gabriel Moreno, Archery, Philippines

The 17-year-old is not your average teenager, having won the gold medal during Nanjing’s 2014 Youth Olympic Games. Like Chanatip, this SEA Games will be his first, and he is aiming for a medal finish.

Nguyen Thi Anh Vien, Swimming, Vietnam

The New Paper dubbed 18-year-old Nguyen as 'Iron Girl' and reported that she registered for all 19 women's events. She is a multiple SEA Games medallist, and is gunning for six swimming golds — even as she faces Singapore’s strong contingent.

Nguyen is the first Vietnamese swimmer to clinch Asian Games medals, with two bronzes from Incheon 2014 under her belt.
