This shady bamboo chill out spot at Tanglin Halt in Commonwealth estate is officially no more. The place is believed to have been cleared some time in May this year.
It was occupied over the years by a few elderly folks in the area, who nominally cared for the space and cultivated their own plants. And just like any outdoor resting area, there were weather-beaten chairs, gardening tools and also a shrine put up for worshipping the Datuk Kong deity.
However, this small plot of land also happens to be state land. The Singapore Land Authority (SLA) had over the years tried to clear the area. They have been putting up notices warning against illegal trespassing and encroachment, advising the owners to remove the various artifacts.
The attempt to clear the state land went as far back as 2011, and recently in the first few months of 2015, there was renewed interest in getting rid of the trespassing activities.
The previous attempt was in April:
And the latest attempt was a month later in May:
But even before the deadline on June 4, 2015 was breached, the plot of land was cleared.
And this was before a planned meeting with Member of Parliament, Dr Chia Shi Lu on June 2 to look into alternative arrangements to use the space.
Apparently, the religious artifacts were the first few items removed from the site some time back, leaving behind the chairs and gardening tools.
Prior to the site's clearance, a group of individuals had voluntarily cleaned up the place in May, removing refuse and trash that had accumulated in the area.
