The United Arab Emirates (UAE) floods have caused people to be stranded and cats on the streets left to fend for themselves.

Authorities and residents have conducted rescue operations to save cats around the country, reported Dubai English-language newspaper Khaleej Times.

These cats are believed to be strays or pets left unattended while people rushed to save their families and valuable possessions.

Abu Dhabi is the capital of the UAE.

A video of Dubai Police rescuers successfully saving a stranded cat made its rounds and went viral on Apr. 17.

In the video, the cat could be seen hanging on to a car doorknob while partially submerged in flood waters.

Rescuers safely retrieved the cat and placed it on their rescue craft.

Cats saved by UAE residents

Apart from the authorities, people living in the UAE also took it upon themselves to help affected felines in their areas.

According to Khaleej Times, Abu Dhabi resident Mohamed El Aazaoui managed to rescue four kittens and other cats in his area.

He said he has seen two dead cats in the vicinity so far.

One resident of Motor City in Dubai, Jarka, said she found a trapped cat meowing in her garage when it flooded.

She said: "She was terrified. She wouldn't eat any of the food or drink water because of thunderstorm sounds."

Cat shelters in UAE also bore the brunt of the floods.

Aileen Alnuaimi, who runs one in the Ajman city, said the shelter's cat grooming room was filled with water on Apr. 16.

"I have bunnies living there too and they had climbed on a chair," Aileen said.

She added that the cats were relocated to another room but water had started to enter through the windows.

She then moved the cats into her house.
