Magnitude 5.3 earthquake hits Tokyo & other parts of Japan, tsunami warning not issued

The quake registered lower five on the Japanese seismic scale in Tochigi and Saitama.

An 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck Japan around 8:08am (Singapore time) on Mar. 21, 2024.

No tsunami warning was issued.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake was focused in southern Ibaraki Prefecture, at a depth of 50km, reported NHK and The Japan Times.

The quake registered lower five on the Japanese seismic scale of zero to seven in Tochigi and Saitama prefectures, four in Ibaraki and three in Tokyo, the agency added.

Nuclear plant & train services halted

The Tokai No. 2 nuclear plant in Ibaraki was halted for safety checks and found to have "no abnormality", according to an official at the Nuclear Regulation Authority, reported The Japan Times.

The Tohoku Shinkansen bullet train services were temporarily suspended between Tokyo and Shin-Aomori stations due to a power outage but has since resumed its operations.
