An Indonesian baby born on the day of the country's 2024 election has gone viral for being named after the leading candidate pair, Prabowo Gibran.
A midwife who helped with the childbirth took to Facebook to share about the baby and his unique name.
In the post, she called the baby "gemoy", a slang used to describe something cute and adorable.
It is also an expression closely associated with Defence Minister Prabowo Subianto, who made use of it during his presidential campaign.
Labour
In a follow-up Facebook post, the midwife, who goes by Desi Puspitasari, said that she never thought the post would go as viral as it did.
She shared that around 7am on Feb. 14, some midwives were heading to one of the polling stations in Celikah village, South Sumatra, to vote.
They were also planning to monitor the health and well-being of the voters in every polling station in Celikah village.
A couple then came to the Village Health Post, with the wife saying that her stomach was hurting, and that she started exhibiting signs of labour around dawn.
Desi proceeded to check on the wife and realised that she was close to labour.
A midwife proceeded to contact another to assist with the labour, as childbirth must be "done with four hands".
The day of love, the day of elections
The baby boy was born at 8:40am on Feb. 14, 2024.
"Today is the day of love, and today is the day of the elections. Coincidentally, the father (of the baby) is a supporter of presidential candidate pair Prabowo-Gibran, hence the baby was given the name (Prabowo Gibran)," Desi wrote.
She added that it was fortunate that the unofficial quick-count polls suggest that Prabowo-Gibran has a high chance of becoming Indonesia's next president and vice president.
Indonesia's next leaders
On Feb. 14, 2024, Indonesia headed to the polls to elect its next president.
Unofficial quick count poll shows Defence Minister Prabowo Subianto and his running mate, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, leading the poll.
Quick count results are unofficial early vote count results released ahead of the official tallied results.
The Jakarta Globe reported results to be reliable so long as the numbers show a candidate winning a simple majority of over 50 per cent, with a percentage margin above the quick counts’ margin of error.
This margin of error for Indikator Politik's and Kompas' polls is 1 per cent and less than 1 per cent respectively, as noted by Kompas.
Having secured more than 50 per cent of the total vote, the Prabowo-Gibran pair looks set to become Indonesia's next leaders.
