Loyal customers of an old-school bakery at Clementi will be saddened to hear that it will shuttering for good.

The Emerald Bakery, located at the foot of 325 Clementi Ave 5, first opened in 1998, and is known for their homemade and affordable bakes including kaya buns and marble cakes.

"Alas, what a great 25 years it has been," the bakery said in a Dec. 30, 2023 Instagram post.

"Goodbyes are never easy, but there must come a day where goodbyes must be said. And that day comes today."

Time to rest

The owner's son, Benjamin Lim, shared that his father has been at the helm of the bakery for the past decades.

With how long the bakery has been around, the team behind the bakery has watched its customers grow, both in age and in number.

Lim, who is nearing his 30s, said that he has been eating his father's bakes since 1998.

He also described the dilemma they faced before deciding to close the business.

This is despite the business feeling more like a "family member of [the] local community".

Although the post did not include a specific reason for the bakery's closure, Lim wrote that it was time to "rest and regather" and that they hope to "return in some capacity in future".

Instagram users expressed sadness at the news, with some wishing the owners a happy retirement.
