Action should be taken against Muslim tourists visiting Terengganu and wearing revealing clothes, said state assemblywoman Zuraida Md Noor.

"I witnessed for myself, female Muslim tourists shamelessly wear shorts, singlets, no hijab, and more and more people dare to wear eye-catching clothes to go sightseeing in our tourist spots," she said on Oct. 3, as reported by Utusan Malaysia.

Zuraida, who is from the Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS), also called on the state government during the state legislative assembly debate to enforce stringent actions against Muslim tourists wearing revealing clothes when visiting Terengganu.

PAS, a conservative party, controls the state government of Terengganu but sit in opposition to the federal government of Malaysia as a whole.

PDA not allowed as well

According to Terengganu's tourism regulations, Muslim tourists are required to wear clothes that cover their aurat, or private parts, when visiting the state.

Meanwhile, non-Muslims must wear clothes that are not too tight, transparent, or short, Malaysiakini reported.

Tourists should also not display physical affection openly in public spaces.

In addition, Zuraida urged the authorities to continue monitoring the enforcement of these dressing rules at tourist attactions, hotels, resorts, beaches, and islands.

Blaming the lack of enforcement for the violation of these rules, she said perhaps people did not know about the rules, or they did know but didn't bother following them.

Action taken

Malaysia has enforced actions against its people and tourists if they wear clothes that expose too much of their flesh.

For example, in March 2023, seven men in Kelantan, Malaysia, were given warnings after the shorts they were wearing were deemed too short.

Kelantan's state government also happens to be controlled by PAS and their partners in the Perikatan Nasional coalition.

In May 2023, Malaysia's federal education ministry allowed students and teachers to wear "modest" athletic clothing to school amid soaring temperatures that could reach to as high as 35 degrees Celsius, as reported by CNA.
