Indonesian defence minister Prabowo Subianto and his running mate Gibran Rakabuming Raka have registered themselves as candidates for Indonesia's upcoming 2024 presidential elections, CNBC Indonesia reported.

Donned in matching blue outfits, the presidential and vice presidential hopeful arrived at the General Elections Commission greeted by the sights of their supporters.

Third and final candidate

"We are ready to move forward in front of the Indonesian people by taking our program, bringing our vision, carrying our strategy, to continue development and lead Indonesia to become a developed and prosperous country," Prabowo said in a speech shortly after submitting his candidacy registration.

This is the last day presidential hopefuls and their running mates have to register their candidacy at the General Elections Commission (KPU).

Prabowo's registration makes him the third and final presidential candidate in the February 2024 election.

Anies Baswedan and Ganjar Pranowo, the other two presidential candidates, registered their candidacy at the KPU on Oct. 19, the first day of the week-long registration period for the elections.

205 million Indonesians to vote

Gibran, the eldest son of Joko "Jokowi" Widodo, was initially ineligible to run for vice presidency as he did not meet the required age of 40 to contest for the election.

That changed when the Constitutional Court on Oct. 16 ruled that candidates under the required age of 40 can contest for the 2024 election, provided they have previously held an elected regional office.

This paved the way for the 36-year-old Gibran, who is currently the mayor of Surakarta, to run as Prabowo's running mate in the 2024 election.

More than 205 million local and overseas Indonesians will vote for their next president on Feb. 14, 2024.
