People's Action Party (PAP) Member of Parliament (MP) Vikram Nair has filed a motion on the Israel-Hamas conflict for the next parliamentary sitting on Nov. 6, 2023.

Having earlier described the situation in Gaza as "grave" in an Oct. 23 Facebook post, Vikram noted that he and his parliamentary colleagues have received numerous emails and messages from those concerned about the situation.

Vikram's motion is sponsored by two other PAP MPs, Alex Yam and Zhulkarnain Abdul Rahim.

Motion will address humanitarian aid, condemn those responsible for terrorist acts

In his motion, Vikram outlined the following issues to be discussed in Parliament:

  • To express the House's deepest condolences to all innocent victims and civilian casualties
  • To advocate the urgent delivery of humanitarian aid to the civilian population in Gaza
  • To condemn those responsible for the terrorist acts and violations of international law
  • To call for all parties to ensure the safety and security of civilians, including the release of all hostages
  • To reiterate Singapore's longstanding commitment to a negotiated two-state solution consistent with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions
  • To urge all Singaporeans to safeguard and uphold our multi-racial and multi-religious peace and harmony.

PAP MPs Wan Rizal and Zhulkarnain also previously filed parliamentary questions on the conflict between Israel and Gaza.

Workers' Party released statement on the conflict

On Oct. 18, the Workers' Party (WP) issued a statement on the conflict.

WP said it had received numerous emails and representations from Singaporeans "calling for an immediate end to hostilities and the delivery of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip".

It also expressed its support for Singapore's position on a two-state solution.

"The WP supports Singapore's long-held position that a two-state solution consistent with UN Security Council (UNSC) resolutions is the only viable path to a durable, just and comprehensive resolutions is the only viable part to a durable, just and comprehensive resolution to the longstanding conflict between Israel and Palestine," it said.

The party called on Israel to "reject the punishment of innocent civilians, cease all military operations in the Gaza Strip and to allow for the transit of humanitarian aid into Gaza forthwith".

In addition, WP called for "the immediate return of all Israeli hostages captured in Hamas' military operation in Southern Israel on 7 Oct. 2023".
