A Thai man in Bangkok took to Facebook to share about his eerie experience while staying overnight at a hotel in Sukhumvit, Bangkok.

His post has exploded online with more than 21,000 shares.

What happened

The man, Thanawin Khamsorn, 37, posted photos and videos of his hotel room on Facebook after sensing something strange had apparently happened within a few hours of him falling asleep.

According to videos he shared, a quick glance of the room showed it was clean, cosy, and well-furnished.

However, the caption of the post revealed all was not well on what should have been a regular Tuesday night stay at a hotel.

What post said

The post read: “I checked in at a hotel on July 11 to rest and prepare for work the next day as I was very tired."

"I was assigned room number 510 on the fifth floor. I paid 1,200 baht (S$47) for one night. It was not cheap, but I thought it will do," the post continued.

The weird occurrences were noticed when he was awoken in the middle of the night.

“I did not notice anything amiss upon entering the room as I was exhausted and wanted to sleep. I fell asleep between 9pm to 10pm, and later woke up at about 1:13am after about 4 hours as I heard footsteps inside the room, followed by sounds of running water from the bathroom."

"I decided to turn on all the lights inside the room and started investigating the origin of the sounds."

Things he found

Thanawin then showed some of the items in his room, which he claimed he did not notice when he first got there.

One artefact which he found that appeared strange was an altar at his room’s balcony.

While altars and shrines are commonplace in Thailand, they are placed at the foot of the building at the ground floor, usually at a common area.

But in this case, the altar was accessible from the room the guest is in.

The next discovery, which was more startling, was the appearance of a footprint on the wall that Thanawin said had not been there before he went to bed.

Moreover, he also found coins on the headboard of the two twin beds in the room.

According to Thai beliefs, coins are placed by the living under the mattress or by the head of the bed to buy or rent the space from the owner, who is invisible to people.

To make matters more confounding, Thanawin said he found the word “Death” written in red ink on the wall.

Recorded footage

Thanawin claimed he decided to record what he saw on his phone and contact the hotel staff to change rooms.

He was allowed to move to another room on the second floor.

But he was unable to go back to sleep after his fifth floor room encounter, even though nothing strange happened for the rest of the night.

More details revealed in interview

Thai media subsequently interviewed Thanawin and found out more details about his stay at the hotel, Thaiger reported.

He said he found the room at the last minute and it was the only one available that night.

He also confirmed that he could change rooms after a spare one became vacant as other guests happened to have checked out.

Room not supposed to be for rent

Thanawin also disclosed that he later spoke with the hotel staff and was apparently told that the hotel did not have an empty space for the shrine, so they had to build it on the balcony.

But the staff was adamant that they have never seen the word “Death” and the footprint inside the room before.

The staff added that the room on the fifth floor was not meant for use by guests and kept locked all the time.

It was availed to Thanawin that night as the staff on duty was unaware of the process.

The hotel staff promised to refund Thanawin and even pleaded with him not to disclose the hotel’s name.

However, a glance through the comments section of the post -- which has more than 5,000 comments -- showed that some online have already identified the hotel.
