Adam Road Food Centre will be closed for three months for renovations from Oct. 1 to Dec. 31, 2023.

Extensive renovations

The food centre has gone through multiple renovations over the past decades.

It was one of the first few hawker centres selected for the Hawker Centres Upgrading Program (HUP) in 2001.

The last renovation work on the food centre was completed in 2016 within two months.

Chairman of the food centre’s hawker’s association Syed Abdul Rahaman told Shin Min Daily News that the next renovation would be more extensive than the previous one.

He said the renovations will include painting, renovating the toilet and replacing floor tiles, lights, tables and chairs.

Adam Road Food Centre is a popular spot for local foodies, tourists and foreign delegates.

It also houses three stalls featured in Michelin’s Bib Gourmand 2023 list.

Longer than usual renovations

Some hawkers in the food centre told Shin Min that the renovation would take longer than usual, so they plan to take a break.

Others said that even though they would not have to pay rent for the period, they decided to find part-time jobs to get by.

Members of the public said that while they appreciate that the environment would be newer and cleaner, they hope food prices wouldn’t increase after the renovation.

Syed Abdul Rahaman said that while there is no indication that rental prices will increase after the renovation, miscellaneous fees are expected to increase by around S$150.

He said he hopes that the renovations will restore business to pre-pandemic levels.
