A woman with two young children was apparently accosted by a woman at a playground in Yishun on June 10.

A verbal exchange ensued as the woman with children was accused of letting her offspring get too noisy while playing outdoors in the evening.

The verbal exchange happened at the playground near Block 334 Yishun Street 31 around 8pm.

What went down

The parent, surnamed Liu, told Singapore Chinese-language media Shin Min Daily News that she had brought her two children to the playground in the evening.

When another woman suddenly ran towards her children, screaming at them, the 35-year-old mother immediately went to stop her.

That was when the argument occurred.

Liu said the other party shouted at her about the children playing noisily so late at night and complained that the noise was disturbing her sleep.

Shin Min reported that a video showed Liu arguing with the woman who was wearing a long pink dress.

The woman in pink stressed that while the children can play at the playground in the evening, they should not shout or scream while playing.

Liu highlighted that at that time, only three children were at the playground, so the noise created was minimal.

Liu’s children are aged four and six years old respectively.

It is unclear how old the other child was.

Shin Min could not get in contact with the woman in pink for further comment.

Neighbours weigh in

Although the playground is surrounded by several blocks, neighbours interviewed by Shin Min said the noise created is usually tolerable and kept to a minimum.

A 33-year-old homemaker living in the area said the playground gets crowded from around 4pm, with the children typically leaving at around 8pm after the sun sets.

“This playground attracts children on the younger side. Their parents will watch over them from the side or from their flats,” said Bi.

The Housing and Development Board (HDB) website advises neighbours to “be considerate” and observe quiet hours between 10:30pm and 7am.
