Heavy traffic is expected at Tuas and Woodlands checkpoints during the upcoming Hari Raya Haji holiday on Jun. 29, 2023.

Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) issued a travel advisory warning regarding the traffic situation between Jun. 28, 2023, and Jul. 3, 2023.

ICA advises travellers using land checkpoints by car or bus to factor in additional waiting time for immigration clearance.

Travellers departing by car should expect waiting times of close to three hours for peak periods over long weekends, similar to pre-Covid days.

More than 1.2 million travellers used checkpoints during June school holidays

ICA noted that there was continuous heavy traffic at the land checkpoints throughout the June school holidays.

The volume of travellers had also exceeded pre-Covid levels as more than 1.2 million travellers used the land checkpoints between Jun. 16 and Jun. 18, 2023.

This averages to about 406,000 crossings a day, peaking at 430,000 crossings on Jun. 16, 2023.

ICA noted the long queues of cars waiting to clear departure, along with continuous tailbacks from Malaysia.

During the last weekend of the holidays from Jun. 23 to 25, 2023, more than 1.1 million travellers cleared immigration at the land checkpoints.

Measures to alleviate traffic situation and improve travellers' experience

ICA shared that several initiatives have been implemented to help ease the traffic situation, such as the automated clearance initiative.

This allows Singapore residents to clear immigration via the automated lanes without prior enrolment.

In addition, more automated lanes at the bus halls have also been introduced to make automated clearance the default mode in passenger halls.

To prevent overcrowding at the bus concourse and waiting time for buses, ICA is working closely with the Land Transport Authority and cross-border bus services providers like SBS Transit and Causeway Link to increase the frequency of public buses to cope with the increased traveller volume.

More officers will be deployed during peak periods to perform crowd control at Woodlands Checkpoint.

Industrial fans and mobile toilets have also been installed at both Tuas and Woodlands to improve travellers' experience.
