A 47-year-old man is assisting with police investigations after he allegedly slammed a stall owner's head against the wall twice and punched him near a toilet at Bedok Interchange Hawker Centre on May 28 evening.
The stall owner, surnamed Chua (transliteration), 55, told Shin Min Daily News that before things got physical, the man was quarrelling with him after apparently not receiving enough curry chicken for his economy rice meal.
In response to Mothership's queries, the Singapore Police Force confirmed they were alerted to a call for assistance at 209 New Upper Changi Road on Sunday at around 6:50 pm.
A 55-year-old man sustained minor injuries and did not require conveyance to the hospital.
Police investigations are ongoing.
Assailant complained about not getting enough chicken: Chua
Speaking to the Chinese paper, Chua said the the man who assaulted him had visited his stall, "Curry Mixed Veg Rice", on Sunday with the latter's wife and ordered a few dishes, including curry chicken.
However, the alleged assailant believed he was not given enough chicken and started arguing with Chua in front of the stall.
The stall owner said: "He asked me, 'You think I cannot afford the chicken, is it?'"
Chua claimed he had explained to the man patiently at the time that he had no issues giving the customer more chicken as long as he was willing to pay more.
Subsequently, the man left the stall after topping up some extra meat.
Assailant banged Chua's head against the wall & punched him
Little did Chua know that this dispute was far from over.
When the 55-year-old went to use the bathroom, he suddenly felt someone grabbing his head from behind before banging it against the wall twice.
As soon as he turned around, his assailant punched him on the right side of the face before leaving the toilet.
Chua added: "If all you wanted was more chicken, you could have just said so nicely. Why was it necessary to beat someone until they bleed?"
Shin Min observed that there was still blood flowing out between the stall owner's teeth when he was speaking to the Chinese paper.
While Chua kept wiping the blood off with tissue paper, the bleeding showed no signs of stopping.
"After the assault, I alerted the police. However, I didn't go to the hospital because I had to take care of my stall," explained Chua.
Assailant also cursed at stall assistant
According to the stall assistant, surnamed Lee (transliteration), when Chua's alleged assailant came to the stall to argue for more chicken, he also hurled vulgarities at Lee using dialect, and directed it at the assistant's mother.
The 60-year-old immediately clapped back by saying, "I didn't bring my mother to work. Be respectful in how you speak."
The incident left Lee crestfallen as he lamented to Shin Min that it was not an easy job to work as a hawker.
