According to GPS-maker TomTom, Singapore is ranked 45 out of 174 cities in terms of its level of vehicle congestion.

TomTom derived its findings from data collected from cars installed with its GPS devices. Congestion levels, as defined by TomTom in its Traffic Index report, is the increase in overall travel times when compared to non-congested travel.

For 2015, Singapore's average congestion level is 31 per cent, down 2 per cent from 2014.

This means that it takes 31 per cent longer to travel from Point A to B. This data was derived from over 6 million kilometres traveled by vehicles with a TomTom device.

In comparison, Bangkok, which is ranked number 2 behind Mexico, has a congestion level of 57 per cent.

For Singapore, its evening peak hour congestion is 59 per cent, which means travelling during that time takes 59 per cent longer; for Bangkok that number shoots up to 114 per cent.

As expected, Monday morning's and Friday's evening's congestion levels are the worse. TomTom's data also showed that congestion levels in the last five years have held relatively steady.

Certain Asian cities which are known to have congestion problems did not appear on the list - Jakarta, Seoul, and Tokyo to name a few. This is probably due to there being insufficient TomTom GPS devices in those cities.
