As Thailand conducts its annual April conscription, some transgender women have stolen the spotlight — drawing attention for their style and appearance.

How it works
All eligible Thai males are required to show up at the conscription centre.
Absenteeism on registration day can be punishable with a jail term of up to three years.
Some of those who appear for the draft have undergone gender reassignment surgery, but official documents still list them as male.
These women will then need to attain an exemption letter at the conscription centre in order to skip military service.
Thai online users have since collated images of some individuals who sought exemptions at various conscription centres around the country this year.

While some showed up in normal attire, others took the opportunity to flaunt themselves.
Thai influencer Phiratchaya also posted a vlog from her draft day.

Volunteer for shorter stint or get drafted for longer stint
Thai males are eligible for military service at the age of 21 and typically serve for up to two years.
A total of 27,698 men volunteered for active military service this year, accounting for 44 per cent of those called up, Thai PBS World reported.
This was an increase of 1,508 from the previous year's tally.
Those who volunteer for military service serve either six months (for college graduates) or one year (for high school graduates).
After recruiting volunteers, the shortfall will be made up of males who show up at military conscription centres for a lottery-style draft.
This happens when the number of individuals registering for military service does not exceed the available vacancies for that year's cohort.
Those eligible are selected by drawing lots.
In total, 62,318 Thai males were conscripted to maintain the required number of active duty personnel this year.
Lottery system
Eligible recruits will pick a card from a box: Black for exemption and red for conscription.
Their fate depends on the colour of the card they draw.
Theatrics were on full display this year, as usual, with those who picked either black or red were seen wearing their emotions on their sleeves.
They either collapsed in elation at being exempted or in disappointment at having to give up a few years of their lives to serve the nation.
@mothershipsg may the odds be ever in your favour 🟥⬛️ The Thai military conscription lottery, which determines whether eligible men must enter active military service, saw many anxious men awaiting their fate. Each man draws either a red or black card — red signals conscription, while black means exemption from military service. The lottery is held across the country each April, with this year’s running from Apr. 1 to 12. According to The Nation, those required to report this year include Thai men born in 2005, as well as those born between 1997 and 2004 who have never previously undergone military selection, or whose cases have not yet been completed. #mothershipnews #mothershipabroad ♬ original sound - Mothership
