A primary school student in West Sumatra, Indonesia, died after being set on fire, allegedly by her classmate, Kompas, Jakarta Globe and Detik reported.

Sprayed by a bottle of gasoline

The incident occurred when 11-year-old Aldelia Rahman was taking part in a physical education class on Feb. 28, 2024.

According to Aldelia's cousin, a teacher instructed the students to clean the classroom together at the time of the incident. The teacher then lit a fire to burn the rubbish and left the students unsupervised.

Students were surrounding the fire to burn the rubbish when a classmate allegedly grabbed a bottle of gasoline and sprayed it on Aldelia's body.

Strong winds caused the flames to spread, burning Aldelia's clothes and set her on fire.

Tried to run to the bathroom

The surrounding students panicked and scattered upon seeing Aldelia on fire.

Aldelia tried to run to the bathroom but it was locked. She then ran to a classroom while still on fire, causing everyone to scream.

Aldelia was told to roll on the ground to extinguish the fire. The physical education teacher arrived at the scene, tried to strip Aldelia of her clothes, and helped to extinguish the flame.

The 11-year-old was immediately taken to the nearest health clinic.

Suffered 80 per cent burns

Aldelia reportedly suffered burns on about 80 per cent of her body.

Due to the severity of her burns, she was transferred to a local hospital, where she was treated for 35 days.

After receiving treatment, Aldelia was allowed to return home as there were no underlying health conditions, and she sustained only burn injuries.

She initially showed signs of improvement and had a good appetite upon returning from the hospital. But four days after returning home, Aldelia lost her appetite and was taken to the hospital for a check-up.

Aledlia was discharged and readmitted several times until she eventually passed away on May 21, 2024.

Filed a report

Aldelia's family has filed a report against the classmate who allegedly sprayed gasoline on her, and the school for negligence.

The Head of Criminal Investigation of Pariaman police, West Sumatra, confirmed to reporters on Friday (May 24) that they are investigating the incident.
