The Singapore government announced at the end of March that all Singaporeans and Singapore Residents returning from the U.K. and U.S. will serve their 14-day Stay-Home Notice (SHN) in designated hotels.
The list of countries was extended to Singapore Citizens, Permanent Residents and Long Term Pass holders returning from ASEAN countries, France, India and Switzerland.
Upon arrival in Singapore, transportation is arranged for the returnees, from the airport to a designated hotel.
Each person is given their own hotel room, and meals are provided for the entirety of their SHN.
Free 14-day stay in a luxury hotel -- sounds like a sweet deal, right?
A number of individuals serving their SHNs in hotels in Singapore have taken to social media to share their experiences.
First up, the rooms
The rooms look, well, how you would expect luxury hotel rooms to look.
And many people were quite excited about that, such as one Randall Ang (@iwokeuplatefml), who is serving his SHN at Conrad Centennial Singapore:
"Holy f*ck! Sh*t! This is my quarantine area!", he said in the Instagram story.
And he was equally impressed with the bathroom:
He noted that the room and bathroom even came with a stuffed bear and rubber duck toy:
Mothership reader Beverly and Instagram user Mel (@melzaza) also appeared to be content with their accommodation:
Corene Ang (@coreeene) shared her excitement about the coffee stash that her room came with:
Here's Aalap Asurlekar (@aalapasurlekar) describing his accommodations at the Elizabeth Hotel:
"Personally, I am a little disappointed I didn't get a balcony, because I thought I'd enjoy my morning coffee with a view, but the bed's really comfy here and it's quite big, so I guess I'll take that", he said in an Instagram story.
How do meals work?
The food comes delivered in a package three times a day, and SHN-ers are able to choose their meals from a menu.
Here's a look at the menu, from the Instagram story of Randall:
And the food is delivered to the doors of each room, but there is no physical contact between staff and the guests:
But how does the food taste? Here are some people's ratings and thoughts:
And here are some pictures of other SHN meals:
One meal even had avocado as part of the salad:
How guests pass their time
Some took the time to cultivate hobbies and learn new things:
Some hotels, such as Shangri-La's Rasa Sentosa Resort and Spa, even organised activities keep the SHN guests busy, including towel origami, a fire performance, and HIIT class.
And of course, there is the boredom:
One possible cure for boredom: cleaning their own bathrooms and rooms, since room service isn't possible as staff cannot come in contact with the SHN-ers.
Sweet gestures
People also shared the handwritten notes that staff left for them on their food and care packages:
Friends and family are also able to drop items off to be delivered to the guests rooms:
Looks fancy, but probably lonely
But while the fancy, free hotel room, food delivery, and downtime may seem fun and enviable to those of us not living through it, the lack of human contact, the boredom, and the fear of developing symptoms during the SHN are undeniably difficult to go through.
All the best to those doing their part by being socially responsible as they wait out their Stay-Home Notices.
