The family of a seven-year-old boy in Thailand is seeking answers after he drowned during a swimming class on Mar. 25.

According to The Thaiger, the incident occurred at Saint Joseph Yannawa school, a private school in Bangkok.

The boy, identified as Mon, was found dead in the school's swimming pool, and his funeral was held at Yannawa Temple from Mar. 26 to Mar. 29.

Mon's family held a symbolic cremation ceremony without the body, as they wanted to keep him intact until investigations were completed, according to Khaosod.

Missing

Mon's grandmother. Nattaporn, 51, said that she went to the school at 4pm on Mar. 25 to pick up her grandson.

She could not find him.

She said Mon's friends helped her search the school, and they eventually found his shoes on a rack outside the swimming pool area.

Nattaporn said one of Mon's classmates climbed into the pool area and found his bag.

They searched the shower room and the changing room, but Mon was nowhere to be found.

Teachers allegedly said Mon left school

Nattaporn contacted the teachers who allegedly said Mon might have left the school, but Nattaporn did not believe this was possible, as his belongings were left behind, reported The Thaiger.

She began to suspect that her grandson had drowned and urged the swimming trainer to search for him in the pool.

Mon was found in the pool, and CPR was performed.

But the boy had a very weak pulse and later died in the hospital.

CCTV not working

Swimming was the final class of the school day and ended at 2:30pm; the pool closed at 3pm.

Nattaporn said the teachers and the swimming trainer gave conflicting accounts of how many students attended the class, and that no headcount was carried out after the class ended.

According to The Thaiger, the family said the school told them that CCTV cameras around the swimming pool were not working,

The family refused compensation from the school and is seeking a thorough investigation.

The school also issued an official statement expressing its condolences and said it would improve security by providing more lifeguards and installing CCTV cameras at high-risk areas.

The school also said it would fully cooperate with police investigations.
