WhatsappPrime Minister Lawrence Wong had a taste of the original Hainanese chicken rice dish during his ongoing official visit to Hainan, China.

In a Facebook post on Mar. 26, he posted a photo of himself with a bowl of rice, a serving of steamed chicken garnished with vegetables, and a saucer of condiments.

"Had to try the Hainanese Wenchang chicken rice here in Hainan!" he wrote.

Netizens took to the comment section to compare the dish with its Singaporean version.

While some commented on its appetising presentation, others pointed out differences in the cooking methods, including in the use of lime in the Chinese version.

Meeting with Zhao Leji

Against the backdrop of his post, PM Wong met with Zhao Leji, the third-ranking member of Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CCP on Mar. 26.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, both leaders reaffirmed the strength and depth of Singapore-China relations underpinned by exchanges, cooperation and ties.

The All-Round High-Quality Future-Oriented Partnership between both countries was also discussed, with PM Wong and Zhao agreeing good progress has been made to deepen bilateral ties.

"Prime Minister Wong reiterated Singapore's consistent and longstanding "One China" policy," MFA said, adding that he also reaffirmed the shared commitment between both countries to upholding rules-based multilateralism and free trade.

He was also hosted to lunch by the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) Hainan Provincial Committee secretary Feng Fei on the same day, where they discussed the potential for Singapore and Hainan to cooperate on the development of the Hainan Free Trade Port.

PM Wong is visiting China from Mar. 25 to 28, 2026.

In Hainan, he attended and made a keynote address at the Opening Plenary of the 2026 Bo’ao Forum for Asia (BFA) Annual Conference in Hainan on Mar. 26.

From Mar. 26 to 28, PM Wong will be in Hong Kong, where he will be hosted to lunch by HKSAR Chief Executive John Lee and meet with Hong Kong political and business leaders.
