Grab driver in Johor who tried to touch female passenger in back seat allegedly a school teacher

The Grab driver in Johor Bahru who allegedly groped a female passenger while driving has been identified as a school teacher.

According to Sin Chew Daily, he teaches at Johor Jaya Chinese Primary School in Johor Bahru.

The chairman of the school reportedly stated that once the identity of the driver is confirmed, the case will be handed over to the Johor State Education Department for further action.

The chairman told Sin Chew Daily that they are still waiting for the principal to provide further confirmation.

He stated that he could not determine the actual situation based solely on the videos circulating online.

As there are more than 100 teachers in the school and the incident happened off-campus, they are unable to recognise the man, he said.

Grab apologises

The driver's antics were caught on camera by the female passenger and subsequently uploaded to Facebook by her sibling, who also posted a screenshot of the driver's details.

In response to queries from Mothership, Grab Malaysia said it takes the safety of all passengers seriously and are actively looking into the matter.

"We are truly sorry that the passenger went through this distressing experience on our platform. We have reached out to offer our support, and the driver-partner’s account has been banned, while we will cooperate with the authorities as needed," it said.

It added:

"The safety of our community is just as important to us. Every partner undergoes a stringent screening process before joining our platform, and we continuously invest in tech-driven solutions, variety of safety and community awareness to help reduce preventable incidents.

We remain steadfast in our commitment to maintaining a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment for every Malaysian who uses our services."

What driver was seen doing

The incident, which occurred on Feb. 1, took place while the passenger was travelling from Taman Mount Austin towards R&F Mall.

In one clip, the driver could be seen reaching towards the rear passenger seat to the left with one hand, apparently in an attempt to touch the passenger on her thigh.

He also asked her in Mandarin: "How old are you this year? Can you speak Mandarin?"

The passenger, whose age was not revealed, did not answer the question, but used her hand to shield herself from his advances.

In another clip, the man again reached behind in an attempt to touch the passenger's hand, this time asking, "How much? How much to rent a room with you?"

She could be heard responding in Mandarin saying, "I can't be acquired."
