A repeat offender, who was earlier released from prison, was sentenced to eight weeks' jail after helping to facilitate a bribe to a prison officer to smuggle drugs into Changi Prison.

According to The Straits Times, the 38-year-old man, Wilson Ang, pleaded guilty to a corruption charge on Feb. 2.

He had intentionally aided fellow inmate Mohamad Yusof Kasim in giving S$400 to then-prison officer Mohammad Asri Abd Rahim, to smuggle gabapentin pills into the prison.

Gabapentin is a prescription painkiller that can be abused.

Asri, then 39, and Yusof, then 50, were each sentenced to 10 months’ jail in October 2025.

The case

Court documents seen by Mothership stated that Ang was incarcerated in Changi Prison from September 2021.

He was introduced to Yusof the following month and was housed in the same cell as him from February 2022.

On Yusof’s recommendation, Ang was later appointed as a correctional unit attendant (CUA).

From early 2021, Asri started bringing in gabapentin pills into prison and passing them to Yusof for distribution to other CUAs as a reward for their assistance in helping him manage the inmates.

No money was initially exchanged.

Around August 2021, Asri entered into an arrangement with Yusof to smuggle contraband items such as lewd photographs and medication into the prison in exchange for money.

Between August 2021 and June 2022, Asri assisted Yusof in smuggling such items for inmates.

In April 2022, Ang learnt of Asri’s activities and sought to obtain gabapentin for himself.

He was unable to get painkillers for his slipped disc through prison doctors or other means, and decided to ask Yusof to obtain the pills from Asri.

He arranged for his brother to transfer S$4,000 to Yusof and another S$1,000 to Yusof's contact through his mother, for the purpose of getting Asri to smuggle the drugs into prison.

In May 2022, Asri smuggled at least 50 gabapentin pills into Changi Prison, five of which were later passed to Ang through another inmate identified as Yang Lijie.

On Jun. 9 that year, Yusof handed Asri S$400, which investigations later found had come from funds that Ang had earlier provided to Yusof.

Asri later tried to back out of the arrangement but before it ended, other officers raided Yusof's cell and found contraband pills tracing back to Asri.

Court documents did not state how the authorities found out about Ang’s role in the offence.

He was later charged in court in 2025 and was granted bail of S$10,000 on Monday.

He was ordered to surrender himself at the State Courts on Feb. 19 to begin serving his latest sentence.
