A warden in Malaysia was fined RM1,200 (S$365) after he slapped a student for eating bread without permission.

Malaysian tabloid Kosmo! reported that on Apr. 26, Norzaizhul Zainudin, 41, a warden at a tahfiz centre in Malaysia, caused injury to a 16-year-old student after slapping him on both cheeks at the centre’s dormitory.

A tahfiz centre is a type of religious boarding school.

Kemaman District Police Chief Razi Rosli said the student claimed that the incident occured 3:45pm local time.

According to Razi, the student said the warden had slapped him because he had eaten some bread, which was meant for all the students' breakfast the next day, without permission.

This was apparently part of a loaf that was still in its packaging and had been placed in the school's food storage area.

The victim, who filed a police report the following morning, was later admitted to the hospital for treatment.

Initial investigations also found that Zainudin had been appointed as the centre’s warden since December 2024, Razi added.

Slapped with a S$365 fine

Free Malaysia Today reported that according to the charge sheet, Norzaizhul was charged with voluntarily causing hurt under Section 323 of the Penal Code.

The section provides for a prison sentence of up to a year, or a maximum fine of RM2,000 (S$609), or both if convicted.

He was ultimately fined RM1,200 (S$365) by the Kemaman District Magistrate’s Court on Jun. 4 after pleading guilty to the charge.
