The upcoming Geylang Serai Bazaar will feature 500 stalls this year, Berita Mediacorp reported.
The bazaar will have up to 150 stalls selling food and drinks, with each selling items at S$3.
Starting from Mar. 8 until Apr. 10, the event will be held in tandem with the fasting month of Ramadan.
This year, Ramadan starts on Mar. 12 and ends on Apr. 9, as stated by Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS).
Food starting from S$3
Each food and drink stall is required to sell two food products at S$3 each, according to Berita. This is to allow visitors to have more affordable choices.
In addition, these stalls must have a halal certificate or a Muslim owner, or be recognised by a halal certification consultant.
From Mar. 8 to Apr. 9, the bazaar will be open from 10am to 11:59pm each day.
On April 9, the opening hours will be extended until 6am on Apr. 10, which is the date of Hari Raya Puasa. This may be an opportunity for shoppers to make last-minute purchases for the festivities.
The theme for this year’s bazaar will be #SemangatRaya, meaning 'spirit of (Hari) Raya'.
Due to development works around the Geylang Serai area, the number of stalls has decreased from more than 700 in 2023 to 500 in 2024.
Monthly rental capped at S$15,000
On Jan. 12, Minister of State for Home Affairs and National Development Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim announced the dates in a Facebook post.
He wrote that this year, customers can expect “lots of food, shopping, entertainment, colourful lights and more”.
There would also be a monthly maximum rental cap of S$15,000 per booth at the bazaar, as announced by Faishal in Oct. 2023.
This came after controversy in 2023, when the monthly base rental cost for some stalls at the bazaar reportedly went up to S$25,000.
