Despite the Covid-19 pandemic being a difficult time for many, there are still many good Samaritans who have taken to lending others a helping hand.
On July 4, a Mothership reader wrote in to share a random act kindness by a friend, for construction workers in Tuas.
For the unsung heroes
Belinda Lee shared that her friend, Huda, had recently packed and distributed 60 goodie bags to workers in Tuas, together with some friends.
Speaking to Mothership, Huda shared that the inspiration behind the kind act arose after a late night drive home.
While on their way back from visiting Tuas Lamp Post 1, Huda and her friend noticed a few construction workers still hard at work in the area.
They then came up with the idea to distribute goodie bags, to thank the workers for their daily labour.
Contributions from friends and family
In a TikTok video, Huda shared that she asked several close friends and family members if they were willing to contribute to the goody bags.
Thankfully, many were.
Huda and her friends then managed to stuff 60 goodie bags to the brim.
Each bag was filled with a variety of snacks and packet drinks, as well as Covid-19 necessities such as masks and bottles of hand sanitiser.
The distribution
To convey the goodie bags to the migrant workers, Huda and her friend then rallied others to help with the distribution.
In a follow-up TikTok video, Huda and her friends are seen moving around the Tuas area, handing out goodie bags to workers they met along the way.
The plan was straightforward: give out the care packages to any passing construction worker on the street.
The distribution took approximately four hours, from 10:30am to 2am.
"Happy faces"
And according to Huda's TikTok post, the goodie bags were very well-received.
Some workers waved and expressed their thanks with a thumbs up; Huda also shared that some had been so happy that they asked to take pictures together to commemorate the moment.
Lee told Mothership that she'd written in after seeing the TikTok snippets, as she was touched by the kind deed carried out by Huda and her friends.
"Hopefully, this story could inspire others that there is no exercise better for the heart and soul than a random act of kindness in reaching out to the unsung heroes – especially during these tumultuous times."
Huda shared that this was her first time initiating such a project, even though she had helped out with distributing goodies before.
She added that she and her friends intend to continue packing and distributing goodie bags for other workers in the future.
