Inspired by other good Samaritans in Singapore, a group of Singaporeans has pooled funds to give out a total of 500 free meals to delivery riders, taxi and private hire car (PHV) drivers.
The meals will be distributed from two locations on two Saturdays — June 12 and 19, between 11am to 1pm.
125 non-halal lunch boxes (worth S$15 each) from The Peranakan restaurant, and 125 halal lunch boxes (worth S$10 each) from the S17 Community Kitchen will be up for grabs on each of the two Saturdays.

Each lunch box also comes with a bottle of food-grade hand sanitiser from Singapore brand Clenzd.
Riders and drivers can claim the free lunches via roadside pick-up at the following distribution points:
- Claymore Connect drop-off point, 442 Orchard Rd, Singapore 238879 for non-halal lunch boxes
- Block 57 carpark, Lengkok Bahru, Singapore 151057 for halal lunch boxes
Each rider or driver can redeem one set.
"Adopt a Bento"
The menu is curated by Raymond Khoo, restaurateur and founder of ground-up initiative The Saturday Movement that has been preparing weekly Saturday lunches for the elderly since 2011.
The pandemic gave rise to “Adopt a Bento”, a charity meal provision initiative, which involves The Saturday Movement and Khoo's restaurant, The Peranakan, coming together to feed healthcare front-liners, migrant workers, elderly living in one-room rental flats, and former Sungei Road vendors.
Cyndy Tan, one of the meal giveaway's organisers, told Mothership that she and her friends had wanted to offer riders and drivers free meals from an accessible location.
Having heard of "Adopt a Bento", they approached Khoo, who agreed to help by supplying the lunch boxes, and offering his two locations as collection points.
Tan added that the hand sanitisers are donated by a member of their team, in view of the fact that their intended recipients have to eat on-the-go amid the current restrictions on dining in.
Tan said the group wanted to show appreciation to the delivery riders who work so hard while their customers wait safely in the comfort of their homes for food, groceries, and other items to arrive.
"Our hearts also go out to cabbies and PHV drivers whose livelihood has been drastically hit by Covid restrictions."
