An online gift shop in the United States has started selling coins commemorating the U.S. president Donald Trump surviving Covid-19.

They went on sale before Trump left the Walter Reed National Military Medical Centre at 6:30pm on Monday, Oct. 5 (U.S. time).

The coins are sold for US$100 (S$136) each by a shop called White House Gift Shop that is not affiliated with the White House.

The gift shop says it will start shipping the coins from Nov. 14.

A picture of the coin is not available at the time of writing.

According to the coin designer Anthony Giannini, the coin is the final design in a series of commemorative coins that show Trump's "historic presidential win" and his "ascendance over and personal defeat of the deadly Covid pandemic virus".

Giannini said of the inspiration behind the design: "President Trump, as you know, is a fan of boxing, and the new coin design features more than a hint of superhero qualities in history's most fascinating president."

Played down impact of Covid-19

Upon arriving at the White House after leaving the hospital, Trump removed his mask and posed for pictures while doing a salute.

In a tweet announcing his return previously, he said he was "feeling really good" and asked people not to be afraid of Covid-19 and not to let it "dominate" their lives.

Trump later continued to play down the impact of Covid-19 by comparing its death rate to the death rate of the flu.

His tweet was flagged by Twitter as "spreading harmful information about Covid-19", but had not been taken down as it "may be in the public's interest for the tweet to remain accessible".

According to the U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, the flu resulted in 61,099 deaths in 2017 to 2018, which was one of the country's worst flu seasons in recent years.

About 209,560 deaths have been attributed to Covid-19 in the U.S. so far.

Trump's campaign advisers had previously said the president's "firsthand experience" with Covid-19 will help him deal with the pandemic better than Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, who has tested negative for the virus.

Trump's supporters had also posted on social media that he has defeated Covid-19.
