Former Workers' Party (WP) Secretary-General Low Thia Khiang addressed voters in Teochew in a heartfelt video uploaded to social media.
Speaks in Teochew for Hougang rallies since 1991
Low has always been known for his furrowed brows and rousing speeches in Teochew.
Speaking fluently in dialect in a Facebook video uploaded by WP, he said he has been speaking in Teochew at Hougang rallies since 1991.
For this current 2020 General Election, however, physical rallies are not allowed.
In the video, Low shared that he would still visit his friends in Hougang, even after moving over to contest in Aljunied GRC during the 2011 elections.
"I will always remember the familiar and warm feelings. This is why I refer to Hougang as my second home."
Talked about younger WP candidates
Low also touched on how the party has fielded young candidates for this election and is "focused on nurturing the younger generation of political talents" to succeed the senior Members of Parliament (MPs) and leaders.
It was announced in a June 25 press conference that Low would not be running this election.
Low quoted a Chinese idiom, poetically expressing it in Teochew:
"As in the Yangtze River, the waves behind ride on the ones before, the new generation exceeds their predecessors."
He called the process as a "systemic renewal" that ensures that there are successors who are ready to step up at any time.
He also added that he planned early on to nurture the younger generation.
Elaborating with an example, he said that Pritam Singh succeeded him as the party's secretary-general.
He added that the renewal allows him to "step down and support them from behind the scenes" and hoped to continue serving in constituencies managed by WP.
